Boston Comic Con 2014

I had a pretty uneventful comic con this year. My sister and I only went for Friday because of a historical weekend in Nahant which we attended Saturday and Sunday.

But anyways, Boston Comic Con was fun, even though we only went the one day. I wore my Blue Beetle dress that I had made for my first Comic Con, while my sister wore a hipster-esque Superman ensemble. I was really distressed because I cannot for the life of me find the over skirt from my dress. In all it was pretty uneventful, so here's a picture dump.

Recap: Arisia 2014

Sorry for being not around. I'm gonna come back eventually. But here's a thing I didn't get to post about.

I've probably mentioned that I've been attending Arisia since I has a child-in-tow, and this year I was able to go in my own right.
I was able to be on three panels: All Ages Comics,  Making and Modifying Patterns, and Cross-Cultural Costuming. All three were wonderful experiences, but very intimidating.

 In the All Ages Comics panel, I was not only the youngest panelist, but the only girl! I sat next to the moderator and was really glad that he made sure every panelist had a chance to talk equally. The only downside of the panel was a panelist's horrible word choice saying something like 'We've talked about a lot of great female characters, but now let's have some male representation'. Put me in a bit of a sour mood for the last few minutes of the panel, but I hope it didn't show.

The panel about patterning was nice, though I felt like I didn't know anything by the end of the panel. Everyone had so much experience and I have what,  not even three years. Most of the advice that I gave was things my sister taught me.

And the Cross Cultural Costuming panel was just as one would expect. It basically boiled down to don't be a jerk and do some research.

But all that is the boring part. There was a time travelers' ball on saturday night with some really well dressed peeps as well as people just there to have fun out of costume:

This girl here gets a special mention as my favorite costume of the night (besides my sister but she cheated) I've fallen so out of love with steampunk, but this outfit is so great.

The historical dance troupe I'm a member of did a Dr. Who themed performance for the Masquerade half time show on Sunday.

In all I would call this con a success, I kept myself busier than usual and it was nice.

Hey guys, I'm still taking a small break from my blog, but Sunday was a small costume competition at my local Anime merch store, Anime Zakka. I somehow managed to scrounge together a Sailor Jupiter costume the day of the event, after helping my friend make a costume for herself. I was super lazy and stressed, so I never got personal pictures of our costumes, but the photographer they had did an amazing job.
So First off, here's how the contest works: Anime Zakka posted our pictures on their facebook page and whichever costume gets the most "likes" before Monday (11/4) will win the prize of a gift card for their store. easy peasy, right? I'd really appreciate if my readers could help me or my friend win (you can vote for as many entries as you like, so also look at the other contestants).

 As I mentioned, I made this costume the day of, with some help from my mom (she had to sew me in because there wasn't enough time for a zipper). I still need to put the sleeves on, then closures, then I wan wear it again. You can vote for me here.

At New York Comic Con

Hey guys. I'm at NYCC on Saturday, work on Sunday, and resting Monday, so I don't know when a new post will be.

College Night at the Museum of Science

So I got myself trapped in one of those "If I ignore my blog long enough, people will forget I haven't updated in a while" cycles where I wasn't doing anything in my social life and feeling really bad about it. I don't know when my next post will be, so no false hope for you guys, but I did go on a little adventure with some friends recently.

As many of you remember from last year, the Museum of Science has a night each year that's free to college students. I think last year they actually closed the museum early so the college students had free reign. I saw a few children this year, so maybe they kept it open still?

Here's my outfit:

I had wanted to wear something science-y, but I guess that's just not in my closet atm. But hey, I have a scientist, an engineer, and a doctor on my chest and that's close enough.

I didn't get any pictures besides these. Playing around with scale and size. I couldn't decide if I was supposed to feel like Goldilocks or Alice in Wonderland. I liked the biggest chair most of course 'cause it made me feel tall.
There's a Science of Pixar exhibit in the works and I thought the most interesting part was a real life model of a single room where you turned dials to change the lighting, then went to a computer with a CGI model of the same room and try to recreate the same lighting. It's really not as easy as I thought it should be since the lighting doesn't follow the same rules. There was also a display where tiny balls would be released down  an incline to show how CGIwater is made to flow using the same principles.

Oh and a short update in my life is I finally got a job, where being jobless and moneyless was part of the reason I was so inactive.

Julia's not Boston Comic Con weekend

As most of you know, shit's been happening in Boston this week, but now it's finally over. Because of this shit, Boston Comic Con was postponed so the free time I had planned to be away at the con was suddenly empty.
I was super excited on Saturday because Jason David Frank (aka the green/white/red/black ranger also aka my first childhood crush) was still making appearances in the area. I made a super quick and dirty white ranger dress (which I don't have pictures of yet because I made it in 3 hours and wanna do more work on it) and rushed out to Boston with my roommate. 

my roommate got to sign something off her bucket list and I got to hold the white ranger helmet. so totally worth it.

Sunday was archery. I got my first lesson last week, and went back for more this week. Because it's not the safest thing, I don't have any picture of myself actively but here's me with some equipment:

I only shot from the 15 ft line, but we took turns with some who shot from a 40 ft line. super impressive.

About an hour in, we learned some aiming with silhouettes of Napoleon. and I'm proud to say I got a headshot:

I hope everyone planning on going to BCC found fun things to do this weekend instead. Sucks that it got postponed, but now I can work on another dress for the con.

International Geek Girl Pen Pal Club

If you follow my twitter, you know that I joined the IGGPPC (spelled out in title).  I'm still sorry for the sporadic updates but after this weekend I'll have tons more free time so please just wait until then.

Assassin's Creed IV already?

As many know, Assassin's Creed IV will be available this holiday season. I'm interested to see how this is going to pan out considering what I have been spoiled from Assassin's Creed III (no, I haven't finished it yet.).
We recently got a trailer for the game here:

From an I suck at videogames standpoint, I'm worried. I was one of the few people who didn't like the naval missions in Assassin's Creed III, and I'm expecting even more naval missions since it's pirates.

From a what my blog is actually about (my sense of fashion), I'm a bit disappointed by Edward's lack of beak on his hood. I thought the beaked hood was a good way to tie together the assassins though time (I was always hoping Desmond would change to a beaked hood). I know this is a little detail and it's not like every assassin in the games had that feature, but it was iconic of the series.

But enough of me being a Debbie Downer. Here's what I like: He's blond, which is a nice change of pace. He's a pirate, and I liked being able to fight on ships in AC3. He dual wields cutlasses which will be super and look at all his shiny guns. I am about 9000% sure I'm gonna have fun killing Templars as this dude.

Batgirl!

I love Batgirl. I love all the Batgirls, but I love Steph the most. That's why I freaked out when my sister showed me this dress from Modcloth:

The next day, we went to the comic book store together (can you guess which one?) with Raven (who got a shiny new camera). I wore my new dress, and we had a mini photoshoot. Here's the results:

The dress itself is great. I thought it would be cool to do my nails to match, and wear all my batman bling. I'm going to order a yellow bat symbol necklace from etsy to improve this outfit, but here's what I have so far:

I went ice skating with friends Wednesday and then we decided to go see Les Mis at a theater. Despite not being a well functioning person, it was a super duper day. they had a whole bunch of hobbit stuff out and here's some of my fave pics:

All the things that happened on Saturday with this holiday was an accident. It happened to be Pretend to be a time traveler day, but it was also Fezziwig's Ball in Salem. It's a historical dance where I usually run check in, so I was already wearing a ballgown when I decided to go to the comic book store:

New York Comic Con part two

Sorry Guys, I think I was half asleep then I wrote my last blog post, so there was a distinct lack of witty commentary. Well, today is not much better.

You might remember the jumper my sister is wearing from here, but I never got a chance to share the skirt which I had also worn for the Sunday of PAX.

There was a hell of a lot of people there.

I had wanted to try the Flash Mac and Cheese, but I guess I wasn't fast enough because they had sold out.

Also, I bought stickers!

In other news, I just found out that I am Birthday Buddies with Booster Gold.
Also I did my nails based on the game Prototype earlier this week.
